When something goes wrong

Start with pasture status. It says where each model is, how much space models use, and, when a model could not move away, why.

Terminal says "command not found: pasture"

Open a new Terminal window. The install command adds the folder that holds pasture to your PATH, and only a new window reads that change.

When a new window still cannot find pasture, your Terminal uses a shell other than zsh or bash, whose startup file the install command does not know. It printed the line to add to that file instead, such as:

export PATH="/Users/you/.local/bin:$PATH"

A download stops with "507 Insufficient Storage"

pasture found no room for the model within your limits, so it stopped the download before it began. The message says which limit stopped it, and ends with what to change, such as lowering the reserve, as When the disk is nearly full shows.

"pasture is not running"

A pasture command could not reach pasture. Start it again:

pasture install

The install says the Ollama app holds the port

The Ollama app runs its own copy of Ollama at the address pasture uses. Quit the app from its menu bar icon, remove it from System Settings > General > Login Items, and run pasture install again.

The first answer takes a long time

When your computer has no GPU, a model that reasons before it answers, such as qwen3.5, can take minutes. Add --think=false to pasture run, as pasture onboard shows, for an answer in seconds.

Otherwise, the model was moved away, and pasture is bringing it back, by download unless you set an archive folder. Wait for it. Later answers come at the usual speed. When it takes more than a few seconds, pasture posts a notification, and another when the model is back. pasture status shows how far it has come. To keep a model on the disk, pin it with pasture pin, and to have models come back in seconds, set an archive folder on an external drive.

A model will not move away

pasture status says why on the model's row. Ollama may have the model loaded: run pasture stop with the model's name. A model you built with ollama create moves away only when an archive folder is set.

A model says its archive folder cannot be read

The drive that holds your archive folder is unplugged. Plug it in, and use the model again.

A web app cannot use your models

Allow the site it comes from, as Web apps in your browser shows.

Read pasture's log

pasture writes what it does to its log. On a Mac, open ~/Library/Logs/pasture.log in the Console app. On Linux, run journalctl --user -u pasture.

Troubleshooting lists every error and what it means.
